Securing and maintaining a server is no easy job and certainly no job for amateurs.

Although taking steps to secure your web site doesn't require professional help, securing your web server definitely does.

You just can't afford to take any chances.

If you're contemplating buying and running your own web server and you don't have a properly trained IT staff to help you maintain and secure it - don't.

In fact, even if you do have a properly trained IT staff to help you, it's still a better idea to contract out for server space and maintenance.

Some departments will assume that using an internal web server is a more secure and cost effective solution than renting space on a commercial web server, but this is very far from the truth.

Even if you discount the extra work and hassle running your own server will bring into your life, protecting a web server from unauthorized access and enabling secure transmission of data will easily cost your department into the thousands of dollars for extra equipment, licenses, and software.

My advice is to not even consider running your own web server. There are many reputable and experienced web hosting companies across the internet that will do it for you for less than $20 a month.

These aren't mom and pop shops, these are professionals whose services are being used by Fortune 500 companies across the United States.

Commercial web hosts enable the transfer of millions of dollars in e-commerce traffic and other sensitive data daily - do you think they'll know more about securing and maintaining a server than you or I (or even our IT departments) will?

So do I. After all, their business and their reputation depend on it.

I'm not going to offer any more advice on this subject beyond get professional help!

There's just no convincing reason not to.
